Workshop Description
A Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) workshop is a training program teaching emergency clinician the use of portable ultrasound machines for various emergency bedside applications. The workshop typically includes both didactic and hands-on components. The didactic portion covers the fundamental principles of ultrasound technology, essential machine operation, and familiarity with high-yield applications of POCUS for clinicians.
The hands-on portion of the workshop includes supervised scanning time with model patients and group image interpretation of POCUS clips with varying pathologies. The workshop also covers techniques to perform focused diagnostic ultrasound examinations at the bedside, including imaging of the heart, lungs, abdomen, and lower extremity veins and using ultrasound to perform bedside procedures like vascular access, thoracentesis, and paracentesis. POCUS requires persistent training and practice but promises improved patient care and outcomes in ED.
